How to scan a job description for keywords

Title, responsibilities and — most importantly — the requirements section. The more of the posting you paste, the better it can tell a hard requirement from a nice-to-have.

Keywords come back in three groups: required, preferred, and also mentioned. Repeated terms are marked with a count, because a word the posting uses four times is one it cares about.

Most advice about resume keywords is guesswork. These figures are not — they are the aggregate result of 1,414 resume-vs-job-description analyses run on ResumeAtlas between March 2026 – August 2026, showing which keywords job postings asked for and candidates had actually left out.

The biggest gap is infrastructure, not soft skills
Splitting every matched and missing keyword by type shows a consistent mismatch. Cloud & infrastructure accounts for 33.4% of everything candidates were missing but only 13.6% of what they already had. Ways of working runs the other way — 19.5% of matches against just 6.4% of gaps. Resumes tend to over-describe how someone works and under-list the platforms the posting names.

The skills people list but cannot prove
A missing keyword is not the only way to lose a match. A skill can be present on the resume and still score weak, meaning the term appears — usually in a skills list — with nothing in the experience bullets demonstrating it. This list runs differently from the gap list above: ways of working terms are the ones candidates most often claim without evidence, and per the category split they are also the terms candidates already over-list — 19.5% of matches against just 6.4% of gaps. So the common advice to load a resume with more collaboration and communication language points at the one category where the problem is usually not absence. It is proof.

Percentages are the share of the 288 analyses that recorded weak skills, a smaller sample than the 1,414 above. The median resume in that group carried 8 listed-but-unproven skills. The fix is not to delete the term. It is to move it into an experience bullet with the work that backs it up.
How this was measured. These are resume-vs-job-description analyses run on ResumeAtlas, not a survey of all resumes. The sample skews toward software, data and engineering roles, so the specific tools below reflect those postings more than hiring overall.
