How to read this: These are resume-vs-job-description analyses run on ResumeAtlas, not a survey of all resumes. The sample skews toward software, data and engineering roles, so the specific tools below reflect those postings more than hiring overall. These are medians, not averages, so a handful of outliers cannot move them. Each figure below carries its own sample size, because not every analysis records every field. We have no hiring outcome data — nothing here says whether a resume led to an interview.

Resumes clear the keyword bar, then lose on evidence
Median keyword coverage against the posting is 79% — most resumes are not failing for lack of the job's terms. Where they fall short is proof. The median resume carried 36 bullet points and only 4.5% of them contained a number or measurable outcome. 27.7% of resumes had no quantified bullet anywhere — every line was a description of a responsibility.

About 1 in 8 resumes has a formatting problem before content is even read
The ATS score measures whether a parser can read the resume — headings, dates, section structure, one column vs. two. It is scored before any judgement about job fit. 12.5% of resumes scored below 70, where the parser is likely dropping or scrambling whole sections; 49.7% landed in 70–84 (readable, still leaking points on layout) and 37.8% scored 85 or higher.

When a skill is missing, it is usually a requirement — not a nice-to-have
Across 1,433 analyses where the posting separated required from preferred skills, 74% of the missing skills were required ones and 26% were preferred. The gap candidates actually have is not a polish problem at the edges of a posting; it sits in the must-have list.
The widest gap: Cloud & infrastructure
Cloud & infrastructure accounts for 31.8% of everything postings ask for and resumes do not have, while making up only 12.9% of what resumes do cover. It is the single largest mismatch in the dataset.

The skills postings ask for that resumes most often lack
Share = percent of all 1,793 analyses in which the term was missing. 7,833 distinct skills appeared as gaps across the dataset.
Listed, but never proven
These are skills a resume names but never demonstrates in an experience bullet — the gap a recruiter spots in seconds. The median resume in this subset had 6 such skills. Smaller subset — n = 660 of 1,793 analyses recorded this field.
Experience is rarely the problem
The median resume in the dataset carried 4 years of experience against a median posting requirement of 4 years — a median gap of +1 year in the candidate's favour. Applicants are not, on the whole, under-qualified on years. What they are missing is the specific skills above. n = 1,056 analyses where the posting stated a requirement.
Method, and what this data cannot tell you
- What it is: 1,793 resume-to-job-description analyses run on ResumeAtlas between March 2026 – September 2026. Every row is a real resume compared against a real posting a person intended to apply to.
- Aggregate only: figures are counts and medians across the set. No resume text, personal detail, or identifying information is published or stored for this page.
- Sample skew: the set leans toward software, data and engineering roles, so the specific tools named reflect those postings more than hiring overall.
- Sub-samples: some fields are newer than others. The bullet-level breakdown, the application verdict, and the required-vs-preferred split each cover a fraction of the full set and render their own sample size and date window next to the figure.
- No outcome data: we do not know which applications led to interviews or offers. Nothing here should be read as “what successful resumes do” — only what postings ask for and what resumes contain.
- Updated: 2026-09-15. The figures move as the dataset grows; this page is regenerated from source rather than rewritten.
