The hard part of this format is not the layout — it is writing bullets that end in a measurable result. The builder drafts those from your real experience.

What is the Harvard resume template?

The Harvard resume template — more accurately a Harvard-style format, since it describes a layout rather than a product — is a one-page, single-column resume widely used in campus recruiting, particularly for consulting, banking, and graduate applications. It is defined less by visual design than by a set of rules about what goes where and how each line is written.

Its reputation comes from the bullet discipline rather than the layout: every entry is written as an action verb, the work performed, and a measurable outcome. That is a harder standard than most resume advice sets, and it is the reason the format reads as rigorous even though it uses no design at all.

The Harvard resume format, rule by rule

Education goes first

This is the trait that most distinguishes the Harvard format from a standard professional resume. Your degree, institution, and graduation date sit directly under your contact block, above work experience. It is built for students and recent graduates, whose strongest credential is the degree rather than a job history.

No summary or objective

The format opens straight into Education. There is no personal statement, profile, or objective paragraph. The reasoning is that a one-page student resume cannot spare four lines on self-description when the same space could carry another quantified accomplishment.

Every bullet is action verb + task + measurable result

Bullets start with a past-tense action verb, state what was done, and close with a number wherever one honestly exists: "Grew active membership from 40 to 115 over two academic years." Responsibility statements without outcomes are the single most common weakness this format is designed to remove.

Leadership and activities are a real section

Clubs, societies, volunteering, and campus roles get their own section rather than being buried. For an applicant with two internships, this is often where the strongest evidence of ownership and scale actually lives.

Skills and interests close the page

A short block covering technical skills, languages, and a line of genuine interests. The interests line is deliberate — it gives an interviewer something human to open with, which matters more in campus recruiting than in senior hiring.

One page, one column, no graphics

No photo, no colour blocks, no sidebars, no skill bars, no tables. This is also exactly what makes the format parse cleanly through applicant tracking systems, which is why it survives the transition from campus recruiting to online applications.

Why this format passes ATS screening

The Harvard format predates applicant tracking systems, but it happens to satisfy almost everything a parser needs. There is one column, so text extracts in the order a human reads it. Headings are plain words, so sections map correctly. Nothing important sits inside a table, a text box, or an image, so nothing is silently dropped.

The one adjustment worth making for online applications: this format has no summary, so the keywords a parser scores against have to appear inside your bullets and your skills line. If a posting asks for a tool, name it where you actually used it. Check your resume against the job description →

Harvard resume template FAQ

What is the Harvard resume template?

+

Commonly called the Harvard resume template, it is a single-column, one-page format that leads with Education, uses no summary or objective, and organises the rest into Experience, Leadership, and Skills & Interests. Every bullet is written as an action verb followed by a measurable result. It is widely used in campus recruiting and in consulting, banking, and graduate applications.

Is the Harvard resume format ATS-friendly?

+

Yes, and that is one of its strengths. It is a single column of plain text with standard section headings and no tables, text boxes, icons, columns, or images - which is precisely what applicant tracking systems parse most reliably. A resume in this format can move from a campus career fair to an online application portal without reformatting.

Should education go first on my resume?

+

Put education first if you are a student, a recent graduate, or applying to a programme where the degree is the qualifying credential. Once you have two or more years of full-time work, move Experience above Education and reduce your degree to a single line - at that point your work history is the stronger evidence and should not sit below coursework.

Does the Harvard resume template work for experienced professionals?

+

Partly. The bullet discipline - action verb, scope, measurable outcome - is worth keeping at any level. The section order is not: an experienced candidate should lead with Experience and drop the Leadership and Interests sections, which earn their place on a student resume but crowd out scope and impact on a senior one.
