ChatGPT Prompt to Tailor Your Resume to a Job Description
Last updated: September 5, 2026
Paste your resume and the job posting into ChatGPT with the prompt below and it will rewrite your summary and bullets to match. It works — with two real risks: it tends to rewrite everything, not just what needs it, and it will happily add skills the posting asks for that your resume never actually claimed.
The prompt
Copy this into ChatGPT, then replace the two bracketed sections with your resume and the job posting.
You are a resume editor. I will give you my resume and a job description. Rewrite my professional summary and only the bullet points that can honestly demonstrate a requirement from the job description, using my own experience — do not invent skills, tools, projects, or metrics I did not mention. Leave every other bullet exactly as I wrote it. After the rewrite, list exactly which lines you changed and why. My resume: [paste your resume] The job description: [paste the job posting]
What this prompt gets wrong even when it works
It rewrites more than it should
Told to "tailor the resume," ChatGPT tends to touch nearly every line, not just the ones that map to a requirement. You lose track of what actually changed, and the version you end up submitting is one long AI paraphrase of your original.
It invents experience under instruction not to
Even with an explicit "do not invent" instruction, general-purpose chat models will phrase a requirement you never mentioned as if you did — a job posting asking for "stakeholder management" often becomes a stakeholder-management bullet on your resume, whether or not any of your original bullets support it.
There's no diff to check
A wall of rewritten text with no marker for what changed means checking it against your original by eye, line by line, for a document you're about to submit under your name.
Or skip the copy-paste and run the same rewrite with guardrails
The ResumeAtlas tailor tool does the same job with guardrails: it points your headline and summary at the role, rewrites your latest role in the posting's language, adds the required skills your work already shows, marks every line it changed, and lets you edit any line before you download. Can I just use this ChatGPT prompt instead of a tailoring tool?
+
You can, and it will produce a tailored draft. The tradeoffs: it has no view of which of the posting's requirements your resume already proves, tends to rewrite bullets that didn't need changing, and can add a skill the posting asks for even when told not to invent anything. The ResumeAtlas tailor tool rewrites only the bullets that map to a real requirement, marks every line it changed, and never writes in a skill your original bullets don't support.
Why does ChatGPT add skills I don't have when I tell it not to?
+
A general-purpose chat model is optimized to produce a resume that reads like a strong match for the posting, not to audit each bullet against your actual history line by line. When a requirement has no supporting evidence in what you pasted, the model tends to phrase around the gap rather than flag it. Purpose-built tailoring can enforce that check as a hard rule instead of a soft instruction.
Is the free tailor tool actually free, or does the prompt work just as well?
+
The tailor tool's preview — full rewritten summary and bullets, with every changed line marked — is free with no signup. A one-time payment removes the watermark and unlocks the PDF/Word download. If you'd rather use the prompt above yourself, it works; just read the rewrite closely for any requirement it wrote in without proof in your original bullets.
What should I check before sending a ChatGPT-tailored resume?
+
Read every changed line against your original and ask: did I actually do this? A rewritten bullet that states a tool, scope, or outcome you can't back up in an interview is worse than the generic version it replaced. If a line makes a claim you can't defend, rewrite it yourself or remove it before you submit.
