Are Canva resumes ATS-friendly? We parsed 28 Canva templates

What we found

Every “Canva resumes fail ATS” post on the web quotes a percentage, and none says which templates were tested or what “fail” meant. So we tested the templates people actually pick: the first templates Canva's template gallery returned for the query, taken in order, exported with default settings (PDF Standard) and the template's own placeholder content. No template was added or removed by hand. Each file went through the same text extraction and section detection ResumeAtlas uses, twice: once as a plain top-to-bottom stream (what a parser without column detection sees) and once with column detection on, plus a third pass with the spaced-out headings collapsed, to isolate that one cause.

Pass: readable text, all 3 core sections (Experience, Education, Skills) and name, email and phone all found. Partial: readable text and at least 2 core sections. Fail: no readable text, fewer than 2 core sections, or no name found. Score is the parse score (0–100) the ResumeAtlas checker assigns; the arrow is plain → column-aware. “Headings fixed” is column-aware parsing with letter-spaced lines collapsed back into words. Data generated 2026-09-14.

Every Canva template we tested

In the order Canva returned them. “Lines mixed” is the share of visual lines on which a plain read glues sidebar text to main-column text, the mechanism behind a skills list turning up in the middle of a job description. “Gap found” means the space between the columns was wide enough for column detection to split them; “gap too narrow” means even the column-aware parser read them interleaved.

Can an ATS read a Canva resume?

It can read the words. All 28 standard exports carried a real text layer, confirmed by two separate extractors, so the common warning that Canva turns your resume into a picture did not hold once. What a parser cannot always do is put the words back in the right order or work out which heading they belong under. It does not see a page; it sees a list of text fragments with coordinates and has to rebuild your resume from those. Three things in Canva templates make that rebuild go wrong:

• Text placed side by side. A sidebar next to a main column, or a date column beside the content, means a plain top-to-bottom read alternates between the two blocks line by line. 21 of the 28 templates do this; on them a median 21.8% of lines came out with text from both blocks glued together, up to 34.9% on Black White Minimalist CV Resume. Column detection helps only when there is a clear vertical gap to find: it split 15 of the 21; on the other 6 the columns sit too close together and even the column-aware parser read them interleaved.
• Letter-spaced headings. Canva's signature heading style, wide tracking on small capitals, is stored as a spacing setting, and the exported PDF places every letter as its own fragment. The parser receives “E X P E R I E N C E”, and no list of section names contains that. 16 of the 28 templates have at least one line like this, and 11 of the 28 yielded no recognisable section at all. The same setting on a contact line turns a phone number into "1 2 3 - 4 5 6 - 7 8 9 0", which matches no phone pattern either.
• Headings beside content, and icons. In label-column layouts the section heading sits on the same baseline as the first job title and gets glued to it. Contact icons, for their part, are drawn as shapes, not typed as symbols: none of the 28 exports left icon-font characters in the text, so the icon simply vanishes and the number beside it survives, unless it was letter-spaced.

Under the column-aware parser, 22 of 28 templates yielded a name, 27 an email and 27 a phone number; 10 yielded all three core sections. The contact details mostly survive. The sections are what get lost.

Why is Canva “not ATS-friendly”, and when it is

Canva is a page-layout tool. Every element is a box placed at a coordinate, and its most popular resume templates are designed the way posters are: a coloured sidebar, spaced-out capitals for headings, icons for contact details. None of that is a Canva flaw; it is what the gallery rewards. A single-column Canva template with plain headings exports a PDF that is indistinguishable, to a parser, from one made in Word.

These are the checks the Canva templates tripped most often under the column-aware parser (n = 28):

The three parser conditions tell the story in order. A plain top-to-bottom read passed 3 of 28 and failed 18 outright (median parse score 57). Column detection lifted that to 8 passes and 14 fails (median 66); 5 templates moved to passing purely because the parser understood columns. Collapsing the spaced-out headings on top of that gave 9 passes and 12 fails (median 71) and rescued Black White Minimalist CV Resume. Most of the remaining failures are templates with both problems at once. You do not get to choose which kind of parser an employer runs, so the safe assumption is the plain one.

Which Canva resume templates work with an ATS?

These 8 passed cleanly under the column-aware parser, with every core section and all three contact fields found: White Minimalist Resume (also under a plain read), Minimalist CV Resume, Professional Modern CV Resume, White Black and Blue Modern Professional Resume A4, Modern Minimalist Professional CV Resume, Professional Modern CV Resume (ATS search), Black and White Professional ATS Friendly Resume (also under a plain read), Black and White Modern Web Developer Resume (also under a plain read). Only 3 of those survive a plain read, and what they have in common is dull: one column, or a header band above a single column; headings written as ordinary words; contact details as plain text.

14 failed even with column detection. 11 of them yielded no core section at all: every heading was letter-spaced, sat on the same line as the content beside it, or both. 6 lost the name: it was a monogram, a spaced-out line, or sat inside a graphic.

Canva's “ATS friendly” label. Searching Canva for “ATS friendly resume” returns templates whose designers put those words in the title. Of the first 8, 3 passed under the column-aware parser and 2 under a plain read; 5 of the 8 still place text side by side and 4 still use spaced-out headings. The first 20 results for plain "resume" passed 5 and 1 respectively. The label helps, but it is a designer's claim, not a test result.

How to make a Canva resume ATS-friendly

1. Pick a single-column template, or move the sidebar under the header. This removes the interleaving problem entirely. Narrowing the gap between columns does not help; it is what defeated column detection on 6 of the 21 side-by-side templates.
2. Turn the letter-spacing on headings and contact lines down to zero. Select the heading, open the text spacing control, and set letter spacing to 0. The word looks less like a poster and reads as a word. In our test, collapsing spaced-out lines on its own moved the median parse score from 66 to 71.
3. Use the plain section names. Experience, Education, Skills, as text on their own line, not inside a shape and not beside the first entry. “My journey” and “Toolbox” are the headings that go unrecognised.
4. Type contact details as text; the icons can stay. Email, phone and city under your name, no letter-spacing. The icons themselves did no harm in any of the exports (they are drawn, not typed), but the number beside a spaced-out icon label is the one that goes missing.
5. Export as PDF with the default settings and check it. Canva's higher "pro" export quality is not the lever: for 5 of the templates we exported both ways, 5 of 5 parsed to the same verdict and 5 of 5 produced byte-for-byte the same text. Open the PDF, press Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C and paste into a plain text editor: what you see is roughly what a parser sees. Or run the file through the ResumeAtlas parser and read the extracted fields back.

The “hidden placeholder text” claim. A widely shared warning says Canva leaves the template's original placeholder text in the file, invisible on the page but read by the parser. We tested it on 3 templates by replacing the placeholder name with a marker name and exporting again. The original name survived in none of the 3; the marker name was found in 3 of 3. Editing the template edits what the parser reads.

If you would rather not rebuild by hand, the ResumeAtlas converter takes the Canva PDF and rebuilds the same content as a single-column document with plain headings. Keep the Canva version for direct email and portfolio links; submit the plain one through application portals.

Is Canva good for resumes? Do employers like Canva resumes?

Canva is good at what it is for: a resume a person will look at. Design portfolios, hospitality, retail, roles where the resume is handed over or emailed to a named human: a well-designed Canva resume does no harm there and can help. The question is not whether employers like the look; it is whether the copy that reaches them through a portal still has your skills in it.

We did not measure recruiter opinion and nothing on this page claims to. What we measured is the step before a recruiter: whether the text arrives in the database with the right fields filled. A recruiter who searches that database for a skill will never see a resume whose skills landed in the wrong field. That is the practical meaning of "3 of 28 survive a plain read": not a rejection, an absence.

Are Word or Google Docs templates any better?

Not because of the program. A Word template with text boxes and a two-column table has the same failure modes as a Canva sidebar; a Google Docs template with plain heading styles has none of them. For comparison, we ran ResumeAtlas's own single-column templates through the same parser:

Two controls are an illustration, not a rate, and one of them shows the parser's own limit rather than the template's: the Harvard layout heads its skills “Skills and Interests”, which the section-name list does not currently match, so it scores a partial despite being single-column. The broader finding, that layout, not file type, decides the parse, is the same one our parsing benchmark reached on 181 real submitted resumes. Method and limits

• Sample. Canva groups: the first templates Canva's template gallery returned for the query, taken in order, exported with default settings (PDF Standard) and the template's own placeholder content. No template was added or removed by hand. n = 28 Canva templates (20 for "resume", 8 for "ATS friendly resume"), plus 2 control files. Each template was opened unedited with “Customize this template” and exported from the Canva API as a standard PDF.
• Extraction. pdf.js 6.1.200 (the same library the ResumeAtlas parser ships in the browser); DOCX via mammoth; text-layer cross-check via Xpdf pdftotext 4.00.
• Three parser conditions. The same text fragments were assembled three ways: as a plain top-to-bottom, left-to-right stream; with column detection (a persistent vertical gap of at least 20 points with text on both sides splits the page into blocks read one after the other, exactly what the ResumeAtlas parser ships); and column-aware with letter-spaced lines collapsed back into words, which the site does not do today and is shown only to isolate that cause.
• Layout. A template counts as side-by-side when a gap was found or when a second dense left margin overlaps the first vertically (a sidebar or a date column). “Lines mixed” counts plain-stream lines containing text from both sides of that boundary.
• Scoring. The production ResumeAtlas checker rules: section detection against a fixed list of heading synonyms, name/email/phone extraction, and 12 stress checks. Pass: readable text, all 3 core sections (Experience, Education, Skills) and name, email and phone all found. Partial: readable text and at least 2 core sections. Fail: no readable text, fewer than 2 core sections, or no name found.
• Not counted. Two of the 12 checks are excluded from every figure here because they mis-fire on ordinary typography (a middle-dot separator) or on extraction itself (bullet glyphs).

What this test does not prove

• Real ATS products (Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, iCIMS, Taleo). This is one parser and one text extractor: the shared extraction stage, not any vendor's ranking.
• Recruiter or hiring-manager opinion of Canva resumes. Nothing here measures how a human reacts to a design.
• Templates after a real user edits them. Each was tested with its own placeholder content, so a heavier or lighter edit could change a result.
• Canva's “PDF Print” export, the mobile app export, and the “convert the PDF to Word and re-save” folk remedy.
• Fonts, colour contrast and print quality. Only the text layer was examined.

Data generated 2026-09-14. The template list (names and public Canva links) is published so the test can be repeated; the exported files are Canva's and are not redistributed. Free to cite with attribution.
